Helping the Non-Compliant Child
For Kids, ages 3-7 with Behavior problems
If you are the parent of a child, ages 3-7 who is misbehaving, throwing tantrums or struggling to follow directions, Helping the Non-Compliant Child (HNC) is an excellent intervention. Similar to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (in which I am also trained), HNC teaches core skills to parents, in real time. That is, you practice the skills with your child in session, with the therapist standing by to coach you on how to respond to certain behaviors.
The first stage of HNC involves the parents learning how to provide consistent, positive reactions to their child when the child is behaving well. Consistency of response is a core-parenting skill and this part of HNC makes that skill natural for parents.
The second stage is when we practice what to do when your child misbehaves. Your child might even have a full-on tantrum in my office. That is OK . In fact, that is GOOD. That means you get a chance to practice staying calm, being consistent and using consequences in reasonable, rational way. This makes is much easier to respond to your child's tantrums outside of therapy.
HNC is highly effective and evidenced based. I recommend HNC to all parents of kids ages 3-7 who have chronic behavior problems.
